01/07 TRINIDAD

I've been a few places and seen a few things in my life but folks; let me tell you, there is little that compares to Trinidad. It is magnificent in its beauty. The islands are covered in a lush jungle that I've only ever read about in story books. Vines drip down into the water, creating curtains at the mouths of grottos. There are thousands of parrots in vivid colours in every tree and iguanas around every trunk. Chagaramas Bay, where we docked, is in a national park and devoted to the likes of us ‘Yachties’.

We took a taxi into Port of Spain to stock up on groceries. By taxi, I mean exactly the mini bus variation we have at home. Complete with shouting, honking, bad driving and zero maintenance and hand signals. The place was akin to Jozi, which the boys found very uncomfortable. So we settled for shopping at a HiLo in the 'burbs. At the mall, Nicole finally gave in and bought a bikini and Div got thrown out for not wearing shoes...

We stayed 3 nights and made the most of them. Dennis, whom we met in CT (delivering to Tortola), was there to greet us but we didn't spend much time together. The four of us were on a mission. We hung out in joints that were they're open for breakfast and closing time is up to the last man standing. Div and I danced up a storm and will have the other two 'Lang arm-ing' before this trip is over. Oh, it was grand! A suite of strange and entertaining locals befriended us, including Hugh and Marvin. They drove a water taxi for guests at a holiday house at Goodwill's Bay. The two of them, accompanied by an ever changing pose took Div and me to find some Hard Wine, something similar to OBS. The ingredients on the label include 'weed of the horny goat'!!!

Land is exhausting with all the excitement, not to mention the hammering your body takes. My legs are so stiff from walking on hard concrete; it shudders every time you take a step. My shoulders are stiff from carrying diesel cans and lack of sleep. Johann says he's feeling it too, around his middle, kind of there where you’re liver sits... mmm. Once again, it's good to be back on the water.
