27/10 Intro to Nassau

Well, where do I start? There’s a whole new life to introduce you all to…

I’m working for Sail Nassau in the Bahamas. It’s a charter company of sorts, offering a chance to match race 1992 Americas cup yachts NZL 10 and NZL 12. I’m part of a team who crew and maintain the boats. Racing is full on ‘no holds barred’ – this isn’t amateur hour, friends. And I’m loving it! Off the water, we work our little hearts out keeping the boats in racing order and then celebrate without restraint after. There are a bunch of places that are good for a beer, local joints. If we’re going large, Aura at Atlantis (Sol Kerzner’s place) is tres swanky.

Generally we work 5/6 days a week and on our off day we take the rib out to Rose Island for a bit of fun in the sun. The water is like a bath and clear up to 20feet if not more! Last week we wake boarded past dolphins and had little reef critters peck at our toes in the shallows. Wow, I’m in awe of where I find myself…


There’s a bunch of expats and a few Bahamians as crew. The characters you need to know now are Lightning (Andy) and Tom, Kiwis – two very good sailors and a ton of cocky fun. Tom’s last name is Kiff! No kidding, he’s the original Kiff dude! Hahaha. LeeJ is a Brit – the container (our workshop) is his domain and he fixes all our booboos. Generous and silly. Dave, another Brit is our ‘techie’. An intelligent arrogant sod but I enjoy him thoroughly. Jason, ‘the Rock Star’ is another Kiwi and boss man. And of course Uncle Paul aka. Jesus/Yoda – he’ll break your neck and F*king mean it. The others I’ll introduce to you in time.

I’m living in the crew house in Sandy Port at the mome. Great 4 bed place with our own private jetty out back. Though I’m not home much. What with all the partying with friends and ‘sleep overs’ at LeeJ’s… Still, I kind of play the role of ‘mom’ in the house. Yeah, that über responsible ‘pick me’ sticker is still stuck to my forehead. What can you do?

We’ve got a great week coming up. Tomorrow we’re taking out a kid for the ‘Make a Wish’ Foundation. I rate it’s going to be quite special. And on Friday we’re docking at Atlantis for Halloween.

I’ve had my fair share of frustrations this month, again dealing with bureaucratic bull. The English have solidified the new law that South African’s need a visa to step on their soil. And in true governmental fashion, just to make it more fun, the only place in Italy where you can apply for one is in Rome! Ooola Madonna! This month, on the school outings list, we took ‘Obi One’ a 57’ cat for a sail and visited some workshops and stuff. 23/04 Mein Gott

(my God, my God. You are in heaven, we are in grotto.) I spent the Easter weekend in Chiavenna. A beautiful little town in the mountains, the Alps to be specific. It’s Luca’s home town. We went to visit his parents, who don’t speak a word of English. It was great, Luca reluctantly played translator as his mom and I formed and alliance against unruly boys. Haha. Although I am fully aware of the ‘awesomness’ of living in Venice, my soul has been taking strain. Chiavenna was just the dose I needed to recharge and change my perspective. It’s nestled in this lush valley with just enough urban so as not to feel like you’re stuck in rural nowhere. The minute I got off the train (from Milan) I new something was different here. Something agreed with me and I felt fantastic! I also had the opportunity to appreciate why all the fuss about the Italian Motto Grazzi. 13/02 Where's wally?

Much has happened since I last wrote. Unfortunately reading about it all is probably as exciting as the thousands of burocrat bullshit queues I’ve stood in whilst not writing. For those still a bit confused as to where I am, how and why, this is the ‘Highlights’ package. Last year, or at least the year before that a hurricane took out the Italian consulate in Freeport, Bahamas. Most inconvenient for me as I was trying to get to Italy. Why? I had been accepted to study Yacht Design in Venice. Yay. The Miami office said no problem, they could do the visa for me in 2 weeks but I’ll have to hand in my passport… ie. stuck in Miami for 2 weeks. Not my favourite city , so no. Called London, they too said no problem. So I figured, it was on my way and I may as well pop in and visit an old friend, Jason. London was not exactly a ton of fun when freezing and on a budget.
